Outdoor Socket Circuit Installation at a Nottingham Office, NG7

New RCBO-protected outdoor socket circuit for an NG7 office, with the cable run externally in protective conduit.

A new RCBO-protected socket circuit was installed at an NG7 office, wired externally in conduit for outdoor use.

Overview

A quick summary of this project

We installed a new socket circuit at a commercial office building in Nottingham, NG7, to provide power for outdoor use.

The circuit is protected by its own RCBO at the distribution board, and the cable runs along the outside of the building in conduit, which keeps it protected from weather and physical damage. The office now has a dedicated, protected supply for outdoor equipment.

The problem

What the customer's situation was before we got involved

The office building needed power outside, and its existing circuits weren’t set up for it. Running extension leads out of doors or windows isn’t a safe or practical long-term arrangement for a commercial building. It also creates trip hazards and puts leads at risk of damage.

The client needed a properly installed outdoor socket circuit. It had to have the right protection for outdoor use, and the cable had to be run in a way that could stand up to the weather and day-to-day activity around a working office.

What we did

The work carried out on this job

We installed a new, dedicated socket circuit to provide power for outdoor use at the office building in NG7.

Rather than taking a feed from an existing circuit, we set the new one up as its own circuit, protected by an RCBO at the distribution board. An RCBO (residual current breaker with overcurrent protection) combines two kinds of protection in one device. It protects the circuit against overloads and short circuits, and it switches off the supply if it detects earth leakage. Earth leakage protection matters most for sockets used outdoors, where the risk of electric shock is higher.

Because the RCBO covers this circuit alone, a fault on the outdoor circuit only switches off that circuit. The rest of the office’s power stays on, which matters in a working commercial building.

The cable route ran along the outside of the building, so we installed it in conduit. Conduit gives the cable a protective casing, shielding it from the weather, sunlight and accidental knocks. It also keeps the installation neat and makes the route easy to follow if the circuit ever needs maintenance or alteration.

The office now has a dedicated, RCBO-protected socket circuit for outdoor use, with the external wiring protected in conduit. This gives the client a permanent, properly installed alternative to running extension leads outside.
