When the mains fails in an occupied building, people have to find their way out in the dark — often through a corridor they have walked a hundred times but never in blackness, and never among others trying to do the same. Emergency lighting exists for those few minutes, and it is the one system in a building that is almost never used and must work perfectly the first time it is. Self-contained units with integral batteries are the usual choice, while central battery systems are worth considering on larger sites where testing dozens of individual fittings becomes the real cost. Getting the design right is what avoids the two common failures: too few fittings to satisfy an inspector, or a system so oversized that annual testing becomes a burden nobody keeps up. Every installation is commissioned with photometric compliance confirmed and handed over with certification and a logbook.
