Fire alarm system service for a retail unit

This routine fire alarm servicing and testing visit was for a [PROPERTY TYPE, e.g. office building] in [TOWN], [TOWN] as part of a planned maintenance contract to keep the system compliant with BS 5839-1, which recommends a service by a competent person at least every six months. The visit was booked through our online portal at a time that suited the building manager, and we arranged the test for [early morning] so staff and visitors were not disrupted. Before starting, our engineer notified the alarm receiving centre and the occupants so no one would respond to the alarm as a real fire. We then worked through the system zone by zone: every smoke detector was tested with approved test aerosol, heat detectors were tested with a heat source, and each manual call point was activated to confirm it signalled correctly to the control panel. We checked that the sounders and beacons could be heard and seen throughout the building, confirmed the panel was reporting faults and zones correctly, and load-tested the standby batteries to make sure the system would keep running during a power cut. Everything was recorded in the fire alarm logbook, and the building manager was talked through the results and reminded that the weekly call point test is their responsibility. [One detector near the kitchen was found to be the wrong type for the area], so we provided a fixed-price quote to replace it with a heat detector to prevent false alarms. The client received their BS 5839-1 inspection and servicing certificate through their UES online account, and the next six-monthly service was booked in before we left.
